Transcoding is the process that converts a video file from one format to another. The OpenReel Remote Capture platform includes a built-in transcoder that will allow you to convert recorded clips from their native format (.mov from iOS devices and .webm from webcam recordings) to .mp4.
OpenReel does not automatically create an .mp4 version of the original file. This file can be obtained by clicking the “Request .mp4 file” button.
The original file will be transcoded into an .mp4 version. The file is available for download when the status reads “Ready”.
The transcoding process is not necessary for the native .mov files produced by iOS devices, but an editor may prefer using .mov files. Transcoding will be necessary for .webm files produced by webcam recordings because no video editing software will accept .webm files.
The transcoding process, when done within the OpenReel Remote Capture platform, may take up to several hours. This is due to the fact that our transcoder is a first-come-first-serve queue that services our entire client base. If a requested file takes longer than 4 hours to transcode, please contact email@example.com with the Room ID and the file name. If your files need to be transcoded quickly due to a time-sensitive or urgent matter, we recommend using a free open-source program called Handbrake to transcode them locally on your own computer. You can find instructions for how to do so here.
