Screen Share can be used by Subjects joining by webcam. We recommend limiting webcam and screen recording clips to ~10 minutes (no more than 15). The maximum resolution supported by the platform for this type of recording is 1080p.
Directors can record both the Subject's video feed from their webcam in addition to capturing their screen content, at the same time. If the Subject's computer can not handle the recording of both the webcam feed and the screen capture, then you can use a secondary device to capture the Subject's face; follow the 2 Device Setup below.
From the Director's Side
Single Device Setup
To capture both a Subject's video feed from their webcam and their screen from the same computer, ensure that the Subject's computer meets the recommended specs.
When the Subject comes into the Session, they will need to follow the steps below (under From the Subject's Side) to enable screen sharing.
Once they have enabled screen sharing, you will see a new button appear in the “View” section of the Adjustments panel containing a camera icon and a screen icon. You can toggle between the Subject's webcam video feed and their screen share by clicking the two icons, respectively. You can only view one at a time, though you will be able to record both at once.
Click the big red record button and the recording window will pop up showing that both the Subject's camera and screen share are set to record. From here, you can toggle either of those off, or click Start Recording to begin filming both feeds.
Both files will appear in the Session clips bin as they record, one labeled "Screen" and one labeled "Video". We recommend limiting both webcam and screen recording clips to ~10 minutes (no more than 15).
Click Stop when you're ready to cut.
Two Device Setup
If the Subject's computer does not meet the recommended specs, then we recommend using their computer to capture their screen and another device to capture their face while presenting.
The Subject will need to toggle off their Video feed and toggle on their Screen share feed, on their computer (Device #1)
Bring the Subject's secondary device (ideally a mobile device on a tripod) to capture their face while presenting.
When you click record, you'll see that both devices are toggled on.
Both files will appear in the Session clips bin as they record, as two separate isolated clips. We recommend limiting both webcam and screen recording clips to ~10 minutes (no more than 15).
Click Stop when you're ready to cut.
Record Director's Screen
You can also share your screen as the Director. You must choose this option on the Equipment Selection page before you enter the session. It cannot be toggled on from within the session.
Change the first line from Webcam to Desktop and the second line to Screen Sharing.
Make your selection from the box that appears and click Share.
From within the session, you can adjust the Frame Rate and Resolution for the recording by clicking the Gear Icon in the lower left of your own video feed.
After pressing the Record button, make sure your Director video feed is toggled on so the recording is captured.
From the Subject's Side
Move the screen share toggle to the "On" position.
From the box that appears, select what you would like to share and then click the Share button at the bottom.
While using Screen Share, a pop out box will appear at the bottom of the screen. You can choose Hide to minimize it during recording. When you are finished, click Stop Sharing.
For Mac Users
If it is the first time using Screen Share, you will be asked to grant access. Open System Preferences>Security & Privacy and check the box next to your browser under the Screen Recording section. After granting access, you will have to quit the browser and re-enter the session.
As noted above, the resolution of the Screen Share in OpenReel is dependent on the capabilities of the device you are using and the resolution the screen is set to.
These settings can be found in System Preferences>Displays.
Many Apple built-in displays have an aspect ratio of 16:10, which will give a "Not a 16:9 aspect ratio" message in OpenReel. You can still use screen share with this type of screen and that message will not appear in the recorded file. The only adjustments you can make to the built-in display can be found under the Scaled option under Resolution.
If there is an external display connected a separate box will appear under Display settings. External monitors may have more Resolution options, but again this is dependent on the display you are using.
For PC Users
As noted above, the resolution of the Screen Share in OpenReel is dependent on the capabilities of the device you are using and the resolution the screen is set to.
Right-click anywhere on your Desktop and select Display Settings.
Select the display you wish to use for your screen share. It will appear blue when selected.
After making your display selection, scroll down to select the desired resolution.
