Transcoding Files

Transcoding is the process of converting a video file from one format to another. The OpenReel Remote Capture platform includes a built-in transcoder that allows you to convert recorded clips from their native format (.mov from iOS devices and .webm from webcam recordings) to .mp4.

OpenReel does not automatically create the .mp4 version of the file. It can be obtained by clicking the three dots icon next to the file and then choosing the “Request MP4” option.

The original file will be transcoded into a .mp4 version. The MP4 file is available to be downloaded, shared via a unique URL, or played back in the session when the status reads “MP4 Ready”.

The transcoding process is not always necessary for the native .mov files produced by iOS devices, but an editor may prefer using .mp4 files. Transcoding will be necessary for .webm files produced by webcam recordings as editing software typically will not accept .webm files.

The same transcoding process outlined above can be done on the Project Lobby page as well to avoid entering the session again once recording is completed.

Please note, the OpenReel transcoder uses a "first-come-first-serve" queue that services our entire client base, so the duration of the transcoding process for any file will depend on the size of that queue. If a requested file has not completed transcoding after 4 hours, please contact support@openreel.com with the Room ID and the file name. If your files need to be transcoded quickly due to a time-sensitive or urgent matter, we recommend using a free open-source program called Handbrake to transcode them locally on your own computer.
